* * *

Because of our little chat with Sophia, we were late opening the diner. Mrs. Orsa stood out front, waiting in her usual spot. But someone else stood right behind her and I shook my head. I had been hoping that I wouldn't see him this morning. But Aerie was right. We had to tell Dan what we found out. Maybe he could shed some light on who was in the car. Maybe he already knew.

“Morning everyone.” I kept my head down and unlocked the door.

“Sorry we’re late this morning. Yoga ran over.” I gave Aerie the side-eye. She never let yoga run over. She was like clockwork. I didn't bother to look at Dan. He probably knew that something was up. I walked briskly to the back of the diner. I didn't envy Aerie having to play it cool out front while I got to hide in the kitchen.

I turned on the grill and took everything out of the refrigerator that I needed to start breakfast. After a quick set-up, Aerie was back to write the orders on the chalkboard. Dan wanted his egg sandwich. Aerie had already taken care of Mrs. Orsa's breakfast muffin, but she came in the kitchen to microwave water for Mrs. Orsa’s tea.

I started to grill the sausage patty and toast the English muffin while Aerie rushed to get the coffee pot started. We worked quickly. “You know we have to tell him.”

“I know.” I was resigned. “You do it.”

“We'll both do it.”

“Fine.” When the sandwich was done and the coffee brewed, we took everything out to Dan Lockhart, detective extraordinaire. He sat at the counter absorbed in whatever he was reading on his phone. He glanced up when I placed the plate on the counter. Those eyes. My heart fluttered. I shook my head. I couldn't be crushing on Dan. We drove each other crazy.

“Thank you.” He refolded his napkin and placed it next to his plate. He looked both of us in the eye. “Is there a reason the two of you are late opening the diner?”

This is how he made my blood boil. “We can't be late one morning?”

He tipped his head. “I know you two are up to something. Spill it.”

“We don't have to tell you anything, Detective Lockhart. We’re not suspects.”

“Fine. You don't have to tell me anything.” He smirked and picked up his breakfast and took a bite.

Aerie and I didn't move. We simply stared at him. What was this game he was playing? Did he know something? “Mmm. Good sandwich,” he said with a lilt.

“You know we know something, don't you?” I asked, angry that the tables had turned.

“Nope,” he said between bites.

Aerie beat me to it. “We talked with Sophia today after yoga and she says she saw Tayla Stewart having a very heated argument with someone in a car. At the end of the argument, she keyed the driver side door. Dramatically.”

“Is that so?”

“So now, you tell us what you found out so far,” I blurted.
